Big second half lifts No. 6 Gannon over KU

Gannon began the second half with an 18-6 run and pulled away from Kutztown for an 86-68 victory Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's crossover game at Keystone Arena.

Tied at 41-41 at halftime, the Knights (13-0) were awakened by the play of Carrie Nolen, who scored eight of her 14 points during the run. She converted a three-point play with 12:25 left that made it 57-49.

Meanwhile, the Golden Bears (7-3) were having trouble finding the basket, shooting only 22 percent in the final 20 minutes.

"We fell apart on defense, and we were getting a little tired," said KU's Melissa McQuade, who has scored in double figures for 14 consecutive games. "(Gannon) was shooting better from the outside."

Gannon, which is ranked sixth in Division II, is second in the PSAC in team scoring with 82 points. The Knights were led by Kristina Freeman's 18 points; Brittany Tabron had 13.

Vivian Melvin had a career-high 18 for the Golden Bears; Meredith Starr had 13; and Hazleton Area grad Rachel Wisemiller had 12.

KU stayed close over the first five minutes of the second half and even held a 49-48 lead on a three-point play by Chauntelle Schroeder with 16:18 to go.

But the Knights then started to pull away, sparked by a 9-0 spurt that included five points from Nolen and a technical foul on frustrated KU coach Janet Malouf.

In the second half the Knights made 45.5 percent of their shots, while it seemed anything the Golden Bears put up went off the rim.

"We had good looks, but the shots didn't fall," McQuade said.

Gannon broke out to a 13-point lead with 11 minutes left in the half, but KU turned it around with a 19-7 run over the next five minutes. A 3-pointer by Melvin tied it at 34-34 with 6:01 to go.

From there, the teams exchanged leads before settling for a 41-41 tie at halftime. A jumper by McQuade, who led Kutztown with 13 first-half points, tied the game just before intermission.
