Police arrested Mohammad Abdul Karim, a resident of Naya-Bazaar, Kurseong on 26 January for violating the 14 Foreigners’ Act. He was produced in court and was taken in police remand.
Police have recovered a local ration card, voter's identity card and most importantly an Indian passport from his possession. The incident has caused serious concern in the administrative circles especially as passports are issued on the basis of police verification report of an applicant.
The Darjeeling SP, Mr Rahul Srivastva, said that all people or officials involved in helping the arrested person to obtain the fake documents namely ration card, voter's identity card and passport would be arrested and appropriate action taken against them. “Action would also be taken against those responsible for providing police verification report for him to secure the passport,” the SP said.
Expressing surprise with the incident, the Kurseong SDO, Mr Dibyendu Das, said it is puzzling how such a person managed to obtain a ration card, voter's card and a passport, which are all vital documents in this country. “The matter is being investigated and action would be taken against all those who colluded,” the SDO said. It is reported that the arrested person secured the ration card with help from a food and supply Kurseong office staff in 2000. He also secured a residential certificate in 2001 with the help of a ward councilor and other concerned officials and the voter's ID card. He obtained the passport on 12 June, 2006. According to police, Abdul Karim visited Bangladesh on the strength of the passport thrice in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He had been to his native village of Sukhati under Atwari police station in Paanch Ghar district in Bangladesh.
Abdul Karim is supposed to have claimed that his mother had brought him to India in 1980/81. The man is married to one Habiba Khatun, who is expecting.
